Festivals, in Bhutan’s national language called Tshechus, are a cultural institution of the country. All 20 districts of Bhutan celebrate festivals at different times of the year, but most of them fall in Spring and Autumn seasons. Festival times are the occasions for family members, and people to get together to celebrate the blessings of life, spirituality and community. It is also the occasion to pay homage to Buddhas, protecting deities and pray for the country’s peace and prosperity. Thematic mask dances form core of the festival programs.
