I've wanted to go to Bhutan since the 1990s but have never been a big fan of the $200 (now higher) minimum tariff that the government imposes on travelers. I'm also not really someone who likes to experience a country via a travel agency. But last year I decided to just do it since Bhutan was unlikely to change its tourism rules. Trying to figure out which travel agency to go with was daunting. There are so many! I decided to go with a new one (I thought maybe they'd try harder) - Dorji Phalam Travels - and I must say, I chose well. Tshering, one of the owners, was fantastic! He is very down to earth, open, and really listened to the kind of trip I was interested in which meant it wasn't cookie cutter. The trip was in December 2014 and we went across the country to smaller places that travelers often don't go to, districts like Sarpang and Dagana. That meant sometimes that the accommodations weren't fantastic - but that's actually what I asked for -- I wanted more emphasis on going to places where foreigners don't usually go, than on comfortable hotel amenities. That may not be for everyone, but, from what I saw of Tshering, he'll incorporate whatever you want into your trip. I really enjoyed what I think was a pretty a-typical Bhutan experience -- no fancy festivals (just one in a small town on a rainy day) and no treks - just a great behind-the-scense look at a calm and unique country.

Hi 🙂 We just got back from a 13 day trip to Bhutan. in advance we sent emails to 5 travel agents that had been recommended on various forums. All replied quickly and seemed very attentive to our needs. The regulation of the industry means all agencies should be pretty good as well as the guides. Note the guides are all qualified thru a hard to pass govt course so they're all knowledgeable and try very hard to please. Some guides specialize more in trekking or specific tour types such as weaving, the environment, The agencies all use multiple guides and the guides work for multiple agencies. Given the guide is who you spend all the time with suggest stating your preference for the guide' s knowledge and personality . We chose Dorji Phalam Travels in the end because they were the only agency to offer the 10% discount which you can get if you contact the agency direct. They were also very attentive to our needs. It is run by 2 very educated and well connected guys. Tashi and his wife hosted us for a dinner on our final night which was a fascinating conversation and they even gave us gifts including Tashi's book on the environment in Bhutan.
